Studies on Abnormal Leukocyte Counts Following Adrenalectomy in Rabbits

Abstract
The author, using rabbits, observed the change of the leukocyte count before and after bilateral adrenalectomy. One group was treated with extract of adrenal substance continuously, the other group was treated with epinephrine and prednisolone separately or both together. The following results were obtained.
1. Right after the bilateral adrenalectomy in the normal rabbits, transient leukocytosis was noted accompanying marked pseudoeosinophilia and lymphopenia, which were possibly due to the surgical procedure. Nevertheless, after a certain period of the time the pseudoeosinophil decreased remarkably and the lymphocyte tended to decrease slightly.
2. In the group of rabbits having bilateral adrenalectomy treated with adrenal substance or with both epinephrine and prednisolone together, there was no evidence of the abnormal leukocyte counts due to adrenal insufficiency.
3. In the group of rabbits having bilateral adrenalectomy treated continuously with epinephrine or prednisolone, there was no improvement of the abnormal leukocyte counts due to adrenal insufficiency.
4. Slice continuous administration of adrenal extract or epinephrine plus prednisolone to the bilateral adrenalectornized rabbits prevents the appearance of the abnormal leukocyte counts, it is believed that abnormal counts owing to adrenal insufficiency are due to deficiencies of both its medullary and cortical hormones.
5. Finally, the medulla and cortex of the adrenal gland have some relationships to the regulation of circulating leukocyte counts, including the pseudoeosinophil.
